Pip calculators explained

A 'Pip', short for 'point in percentage', quantifies exchange rate movements between two currencies in Forex trading.

So, how do I find a pip? Here's how...

Typically, a pip in most forex currency pairs is located at the 4th decimal place (0.0001), equivalent to 1/100 of 1%. For JPY pairs (involving the Japenese Yen), a pip appears at the 2nd decimal place (0.01).

Utilising these small measurement units helps protect new traders from substantial losses. A 'pipette', or fractional pip, is 1/10th of a standard pip, offering tighter spreads and precise insights into currency price movements.

For pairs without JPY, one pipette is on the 4th decimal place of the Forex pair.

For JPY pairs, one pip is on the 2nd decimal place of the Forex pair.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The majority of currency pairs have a standard pip value of 0.0001 and are measured to four decimal places. 1 lot is 100,000 units of a currency. If you prefer to open smaller positions, you can choose to trade either mini lots (10,000 units) or even micro lots (1000 lots).

This completely depends on the currency pair that you are trading. If you’re trading the EURUSD, a pip is worth 0.0001, while with the USD/JPY a PIP is worth 0.01. That's why we’ve created our pip calculator above so you can see the true value of a pip – whatever the amount – in seconds.

This also depends on your currency pair. Scroll up to our calculator now and enter your pair, pip amount and lot size to understand just how much 50 pips are worth.

Lots are measured in units of currency, not by pips (i.e., how the exchange rate moves between the currency pair). A lot is 100,000 units.

This varies based on the currency pair and your account type, which you can learn more about here. If your broker offers you leverage, your buying power is increased so you could buy even more of an asset and therefore larger lots. While this can boost your potential profits, your losses are greater too.

Pip value is a crucial part of forex trading. The pip determines how much a price movement can affect your potential profits or losses. Pips measure the change in value between two currencies, reflecting even the smallest market movements - most often representing 0.0001 change in currency value. Understanding your pip value is essential for effective risk management and helps traders set appropriate stop losses and take profit levels.

A pip calculator is an essential tool for any forex trader as it simplifies the process of calculating the pip value for different currency pairs. Simply by entering your trading account currency, the currency pair you are trading, and the trade size, you can calculate the exact value of a pip in your base currency. This assists traders in making more informed trading decisions, managing your risk more effectively, and ensuring that you are aware of potential costs and profits with your trades.
